GRACE SOUGHT ME

Grace sought me when I was astray,
Entangled deep in sin,
And found me when I was away
From God and dead within.

Grace brought me from my wicked ways
And drew me near to God;
Awoke me from my fatal daze
And warned me of my load.

Grace bought me from the wrath of God
And full atonement made.
The price was Jesus’ precious blood
And this Grace gladly paid.

Grace caught me when I slipped again
Back to my sins before,
And gently prodded me with pain
So that I’d slip no more.

Grace taught me that, from first to last,
I never can embrace
A hint of pride since all that’s passed
Has been of God’s pure grace.

REFLECTION

There is no shortage of hymns written on theme of God’s grace, and I’m okay with that. What subject could better move us to praise? What I sought to accomplish in this hymn is to show how God’s sovereign grace is present at every stage in our spiritual journey. Grace sought us, brought us, bought us, caught us, and taught us—some “inner” rhyming that will hopefully help with memorization! Realizing this should absolutely silence our thoughts of pride. Salvation belongs to the Lord, not to us. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
